Mystical Tint Tone and Color

Let's face it, some of the pictures you take are pretty dull and could do with a little spicing up. Likewise, some of the best snaps you take are worth tinkering with to accentuate their quality. Mystical Tint Tone and Color offers a diverse collection of artsitic filters that can be used a stand-alone application or in any imaging app that supports Photoshop-compatible plug-ins.

One of my favourite things about MTTC is that most of the adjustments you make can be applied globally, focused on a particular area or interactively painted onto the image, giving you complete control over your works of art. In terms of the effects themselves, there are plenty to choose from, ranging from Antique Photo to Washed Out. Unfortunately the filters aren't organized into themed categories, but they are loosely divided into three general areas - tint, tone and colour (hence the name of the program - clever, eh?)

The concept of the program is to achieve targeted end results based upon each particular filter. However, the good thing about MTTC is that you can combine several filters in order to achieve different effects or take your graphical creations in another direction.

What would also be handy is a shopping list generator for the recipes that you'd like to cook or at least, a way of indicating whether you have enough ingredients in your kitchen.

Morph Age Pro is an application for morphing and warping still images AND movies on Mac OS X. This Pro version enables you to use movies as input.

With Morph Age Pro, you can create a QuickTime morphing animation from at least 2 input images or videos.

- You mark key points on each image/video (such as the contour of the eyes, nose, mouth...) using curves. Any change made on the curves is reflected on the resulting animation through the corresponding distorsion and morphing effect.

- You can preview the result in real time while working on the morphing project.

- You can make the animation longer or shorter.

- When you are satisfied with the result, you can export either a QuickTime movie or a picture.

Morph Age Pro has most of the latest advances in morphing features, including Smart Assist and interactive preview.

Morph Age Pro has additional support for video morphing and warping, allowing frame accurate processing and advanced keyframed animation. One talking face can be morphed into another talking face as they are talking!

- Morph Age Pro is the only application for morphing videos on the Mac. Other applications are limited to morphing still images.

- Sub-pixel accuracy

- Real-time preview even for mega-pixels images

Morph Age Pro is for graphic designers and video experts as video morphing requires to use keyframes.

Photos for Mac 1.0

Photos for Mac is part of OS X Yostemite. To get the app, make sure you're on OS X Yosemite and have the latest updates installed.

iPhoto was a terrible application. It was slow, buggy, and rarely updated. Thankfully, Photos for Mac is none of these things and is actually a great photo editing app for most people. However, professionals will want to look elsewhere.

The beat features from iPhoto

Photos for Mac distills iPhoto's features down to the ones that matter and improves on simple editing tools. Photos can be as idiot-proof as you'd like or you can dig into more advanced settings to get the results you want.

There's an auto-enhance tool as well as an auto-crop tool that analyzes your photos for horizons and straightens them. This feature makes bulk edits for photos a breeze.

There's also sliders for adjusting lighting, which adjusts many settings hidden from the user. If you want to tweak this automation, you can with the drop down  menu. You still have access to exposure, highlights, contrast, and more.

Faces and Places made it to Photos for Mac but they're hidden. You can tag faces by clicking on the info button for each picture. The app's facial recognition software makes tagging people a breeze. Places is now hidden until you zoom out all the way in the photos tab. You'll see locations in the sections  for each year. Clicking on a location will bring up a map that stacks photos on each location you visited. However, you're no longer able to manually geo-tag photos, which is a bummer.

Learn the new interface

If you've been  using iPhoto for a long time, Photos may look like a dramatic departure. However, I found  it intuitive to pick up and  to find the adjustments  and settings  I was looking for. There is a slight learning curve but you don't have to spend too long with it to find out everything.

Sharing is easy too, though Flickr and Facebook sharing has been removed. Now you're treated with Yosemite's iOS-like sharing menu.

If you have a big photo library, you'll want to pay for more iCloud storage. It's not too expensive and you'll get Photos for Mac's killer feature: cross-device sync of all your photos. If you edit a photo on one device, it's instantly available to all your other devices in full resolution.

A great iPhoto replacement

Apple did a great job balancing simplicity with more advanced features. Photos for Mac simplifies editing, which should please most users. Professionals were likely using other apps instead of iPhoto for editing and Photos for Mac isn't going to win them over either. I recommend professionals purchase Adobe's photography subscription, which gets you Lightroom, Photoshop, and a bunch of mobile apps as well.

iMovie 10.1

iMovie is Apple's flagship program to create and edit movies on your Mac. User friendly, iMovie makes it easy to turn your home videos into polished films.

Incredibly easy to use

iMovie works by importing your movie and then allowing you to cut and paste bits of it together, much as you would with a word processing application. Adding soundtracks is a breeze thanks to integration with iTunes, while images can be just as easily imported from iPhoto and the Photos app (it is even possible to apply an automatic Ken Burns effect to panoramic shots). There is also a Voiceover button below the viewer to allow you to easily add narration.

If you just want to cut something for YouTube, an integrated uploader makes sure your creations go online instantly, although I sometimes find this fails to upload properly or doesn't tag the video correctly. You can also email your creations, or share via. Youku and Tudou, in app.

Easy to add a touch of class

There are tons of trailers and templates for you to choose from that make your movie look far more polished than would ordinarily be possible. By the time you've finished, your raw film should look amazing. There is even green screen and blue screen support if you want to start playing with special effects.

iMovie can be fussy with formats - it works best with DV format films and trying to import other formats may not work (though Sony's XAVC-S and AVCHD are explicitly supported).

Not for Pros but great for the home user

Advanced video editors will find that iMovie lacks specialist editing functions but for most people, iMovie turns you into a pro with minimum effort.
